What a day in the 420 & ILCA Racing program is like

Each day starts with rigging of the boats and a fitness session. After this, sailors will go to the classroom where they will participate in an on-land lesson and briefing.

Sailors in the 420 & ILCA Racing program will usually spend their water sessions performing various drills aimed to improve on the small details of their technique, along with lots of mock races to practice realistic scenarios. It’s a lot of fun!

The day ends with de-rigging and a debrief. (Sometimes this group will spend the whole day on the water, but that will always be communicated in advance.)

What kinds of things will 420 & ILCA Racing sailors do?

Sailors in the 420 & ILCA Racing program will learn the intricate details of performance sailing, participate in weekend local regattas competing against other local sailing clubs, and will even be given the option of participating in the AYC keelboat racing fleet where they can experience different kinds of sailing (completely optional).

What do sailors learn?

The 420 & ILCA Racing program’s curriculum covers the topics found in the CANSail 4, 5, and 6 checklists. The racing program improves and refines a sailor’s skills and knowledge and allows them to practice and develop advanced skillsets.

Some of these concepts include how to rig for the weather, race starts, what goes into the perfect tack, and how to most efficiently path the boat through the race course. It’s a fun way for youth to learn enhanced sailing skills and a great way to prepare them for more racing or even to become an instructor in the future!
